Cask Night Alert!!

Tapping a Scotch Ale Cask

Our next cask night is this coming Friday Jan 20th, after 5pm.  We will be tapping a cask of Russell Brewing Brewmasters Dry Hopped ESB (Extra Special Bitter).

The Russell Blood Alley ESB is named after the historic cobblestone laneway in Gastown.  This ESB balances its bitterness beautifully with rich, roasted malt flavors.

The origins of “Bitter” ale comes. of course, from England.  When one would go to a pub in their town, one would ask for a bitter, to differentiate from the traditional mild, light amber, dark stout or porters.  In reality, an ESB is not that bitter.  You will find that an American IPA will be much more bitter than an ESB.

See you on Friday after 5pm!!

Cioppino

The Sharkey’s Cioppino (pronounced cho-pino with a fancy Italian accent) is our signature dish and by far our number one tasting and selling entree. At only $19.99 (this is a dish definitely over $30 in Vancouver) guests get a feast of a variety of seafood and shellfish stewed in a beautiful tomato broth with hints of sweet red pepper and a touch of Sambuca. This feast is served with a side Caesar salad (also worthy of an honorable mention) and garlic toast.

The word Cioppino actually originates at the docks of San Francisco, California. Back in the day as we say, fishermen used to come back from a long day out at sea and upon arrival back at the docks, they used to all “chip-in” some fish into a communal fish stew. Said with an Italian accent it became “Cioppino.”

Buon Appetito!

Bloody Caesars

The Perfect Starter to any meal

All Caesars $1 off on Sundays

Caesar cocktails are by far the number one selling cocktail at Sharkey’s and in fact, all of Canada.  But does everybody know that the Caesar actually originated in Calgary, BC? Yes!!!  Canada rules!!!

In 1969 at the Westin Hotel in Calgary, a bartender at an Italian themed restaurant “Marco’s” was challenged to come up with an innovative cocktail.  Maybe inspired by a Clam Linguine in tomato sauce, Walter Chell added clam nectar and oregano to a Bloody Mary and came up with the origins of what is now known as a Bloody Caesar.

Here at Sharkey’s, we have many different variations on this classic hangover cure:

Bloody Caesar, Chipotle Caesar, Mexican Fiesta, Acapulco Gold, Cucumber Gin Caesar, Prawn Cocktail Caesar (shown above)
